The Chinese Embassy in The Gambia has reaffirmed its commitment to youth entrepreneurship and economic development through its exclusive support for the second Youth in Business Awards, held on October 16 under the China-Gambia Friendship Bantaba initiative.
Organised by the Gambia Youth Chamber of Commerce (GYCC), the ceremony brought attention to the role of young entrepreneurs in promoting innovation, creating employment and contributing to the country’s economic growth.
Hon. Ceesay, Minister of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment, delivered the opening remarks, congratulating the GYCC on its achievements and expressing appreciation for China’s continued support for youth development in The Gambia.
The minister reaffirmed the Gambian government’s commitment to supporting micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) and promoting trade as essential tools for empowering young entrepreneurs. He highlighted the importance of creating an enabling environment in which young business owners can develop their ideas, expand their activities and contribute to national development.
Speaking on behalf of the Chinese Embassy, Tong Zhan, Counsellor of the Embassy of China in The Gambia, encouraged young Gambians to seize the opportunities arising from bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
He urged entrepreneurs to translate available support into tangible development outcomes, embrace innovation and technology, and explore business opportunities offered through bilateral and multilateral partnerships.
Tong also called on young business leaders to use these opportunities to strengthen their enterprises while contributing to the longstanding friendship between China and The Gambia.
The awards ceremony reflects growing attention to youth-led businesses as a means of fostering economic inclusion, stimulating private-sector growth and creating employment opportunities. By recognising entrepreneurial initiatives, the event also seeks to encourage young Gambians to pursue innovative business ideas and contribute to the country’s economic transformation.
China’s support for the initiative further highlights the role of bilateral cooperation in advancing youth development and entrepreneurship. Through platforms such as the China-Gambia Friendship Bantaba, both countries have opportunities to promote exchanges, encourage business engagement and strengthen links between their private sectors.
The second Youth in Business Awards thus provided a platform to celebrate entrepreneurship while reinforcing the shared interest of The Gambia and China in empowering young people and building stronger economic ties.
