China and Kenya have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation and strengthening coordination on global development and governance, during a seminar jointly hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Kenya, Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs and the Africa Policy Institute.
Held under the theme “Jointly Advance Global Development and Governance: China and Kenya Usher a New Chapter of a Shared Future,” the seminar brought together representatives from the Chinese Embassy, the Kenyan government, international organizations and think tanks.
Participants exchanged views on the significance and practical implementation of China’s four major global initiatives: the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, Global Civilization Initiative and Global Governance Initiative.
Discussions also focused on the latest developments in China-Kenya cooperation, with participants exploring avenues for strengthening practical collaboration and building broader consensus on development and governance issues.
Focus on trade and agricultural exports
The seminar was complemented by a visit to a Kenyan avocado export company, providing an opportunity to observe the implementation of China’s zero-tariff policy for African products.
The visit highlighted the importance of market access and trade facilitation in expanding economic ties between China and African countries. Kenya’s agricultural sector, including its avocado exports, is among the areas with potential to benefit from improved access to the Chinese market.
The engagement comes amid broader efforts to expand China-Africa economic cooperation and promote trade between the two sides.
Towards deeper China-Kenya cooperation
The organizers expressed their intention to continue working with bilateral and multilateral partners to strengthen dialogue, build greater consensus and deepen practical cooperation.
The discussions in Nairobi also underscored the growing role of China-Kenya relations within the broader framework of China-Africa cooperation, particularly in areas related to development, trade, security, governance and people-to-people exchanges.
The seminar and the visit to the avocado exporter provided a platform for translating policy discussions into concrete areas of cooperation, while highlighting the importance of continued engagement between China, Kenya and their international partners.
