Ethiopia is seeking to deepen investment cooperation with Türkiye’s pharmaceutical industry as part of efforts to expand local manufacturing and strengthen the country’s pharmaceutical sector.
The Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of Ethiopia in Ankara, Mr. Shemelis Adugna, held discussions with representatives of World Medicine, one of Türkiye’s leading pharmaceutical companies, to explore potential investment opportunities in Ethiopia.
During the meeting, Mr. Shemelis highlighted Ethiopia’s growing investment potential, government support and incentives available to foreign investors. He placed particular emphasis on opportunities for pharmaceutical manufacturing within Ethiopia’s industrial parks.
The World Medicine representatives briefed the Ethiopian delegation on the company’s international operations and product portfolio. The company has produced more than 600 pharmaceutical products and exports to more than 65 countries.
World Medicine also has an established presence in the Ethiopian market. Fourteen of its pharmaceutical products have already been registered in Ethiopia, while an additional 11 products are currently undergoing registration.
The discussions focused on opportunities to move beyond pharmaceutical imports toward greater local production, technology transfer and investment in manufacturing capacity. Such partnerships could contribute to Ethiopia’s efforts to strengthen its domestic pharmaceutical industry and improve access to medicines.
Mr. Shemelis invited World Medicine to visit Ethiopia for further discussions and encouraged the company to explore joint-venture opportunities with Ethiopian Investment Holdings (EIH).
Potential areas of cooperation include pharmaceutical manufacturing, technology transfer and the establishment of local production facilities.
The engagement reflects Ethiopia’s efforts to attract strategic foreign investment into priority sectors and to build partnerships that can support industrial development, technology transfer and the expansion of domestic manufacturing capacity.
A potential partnership with World Medicine would further strengthen economic ties between Ethiopia and Türkiye while creating opportunities for greater cooperation in the pharmaceutical sector.
