Ethiopian students and school officials from Hellenic Greek International School in Ethiopia, who travelled to Japan to participate in the Japan–Africa Youth Program, were welcomed at the Embassy of Ethiopia in Japan.
During the reception, H.E. Ambassador Daba Debele extended a warm welcome to the participants and expressed his appreciation to the Government of Japan, the Japan International Cooperation Center (JICE), and all other stakeholders involved in making the program a success.
The Ambassador noted that youth exchange programs of this nature play an important role in promoting mutual understanding between Africa and Japan and in building lasting bonds of friendship and cooperation among young people from the two sides.
He also encouraged the students to make the most of the opportunity by introducing Ethiopia, its culture, history and society to the Japanese public and contributing to a better understanding of their country.
During the event, the students received a briefing on the history and current state of diplomatic relations between Ethiopia and Japan, as well as on the major activities carried out by the Ethiopian Embassy.
The students then had the opportunity to ask questions about Ethiopia–Japan relations and the work of the Embassy, with officials providing responses and further explanations. The program concluded following the interactive session.
Under the same Japan–Africa Youth Program, Japanese students are also expected to travel to Ethiopia and several other selected African countries in September 2026.
The student exchange initiative is expected to provide young people from Ethiopia and Japan with opportunities to interact directly, learn about each other’s cultures, and develop a deeper understanding of their similarities and differences. It is also seen as an important platform for strengthening the foundation for future cooperation and friendship between the two countries’ younger generations.
