A councillor from the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) is participating in an international seminar on climate action and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Beijing, China, as The Gambia seeks to strengthen local capacity for climate resilience and sustainable urban development.
Lamin Jammeh, Councillor for the Manjai Kunda/Kotu Ward, is attending the Seminar on Climate Action and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for Developing Countries, which runs from 25 August to 14 September 2026.
The programme is organised by the International Cooperation Center (ICC) of China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and brings together government officials from developing countries to exchange experiences, share knowledge and strengthen institutional capacity in addressing climate change and advancing sustainable development.
For KMC, Councillor Jammeh’s participation offers an opportunity to gain practical knowledge that could be applied to local government planning and development in The Gambia. The seminar is expected to expose participants to approaches for building climate-resilient communities, promoting sustainable urban development and advancing the implementation of the SDGs.
The engagement is particularly relevant for local authorities facing growing challenges related to urbanisation, environmental sustainability and climate change. By participating in international knowledge-sharing programmes, local government representatives can gain access to experiences and practices that may inform future policies and community-level initiatives.
KMC said the councillor’s participation would also provide an avenue for sharing The Gambia’s own experiences and challenges in climate action and sustainable development with officials and experts from other developing countries.
The municipal council expressed its appreciation to the organisers and facilitators of the programme, as well as the Chinese Embassy in The Gambia, for supporting the initiative and making the participation possible.
The seminar underscores the growing importance of international cooperation and knowledge exchange in helping developing countries strengthen their response to climate change while working toward the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.
