Japan has reaffirmed its support for initiatives aimed at protecting and empowering women and girls with the official launch of Guardian Girls Nigeria (GGN), marked by a reception hosted by Ambassador Suzuki on October 14.
The event celebrated the commencement of GGN’s activities in Nigeria and highlighted the role of martial arts in promoting gender equality, preventing violence and strengthening the ability of women and girls to protect themselves.
Guardian Girls International (GGI) is dedicated to safeguarding and empowering women and girls through martial arts-based programmes. Its work focuses on advancing gender equality and preventing and addressing violence against women and girls.
With the start of its operations, Guardian Girls Nigeria will serve as GGI’s base in the country, providing a platform for expanding the organisation’s activities and building partnerships with local institutions.
A key highlight of the reception was the signing of four memoranda of understanding (MOUs) with university and sports organisations. The agreements are expected to establish a foundation for cooperation and support the implementation of programmes aligned with GGN’s mission.
Collaboration with academic institutions and sports organisations can help extend the reach of martial arts-based initiatives, engage young people and promote awareness of violence prevention and gender equality.
The launch marks a new step in efforts to strengthen institutional cooperation around the protection and empowerment of women and girls in Nigeria. By combining martial arts with educational and community-based engagement, Guardian Girls Nigeria aims to contribute to creating safer environments and expanding opportunities for women and girls.
Japan’s support for the initiative also underscores the importance of international partnerships in addressing gender-based violence and promoting the rights and well-being of women and girls.
With its activities now underway, GGN will seek to build on its partnerships with universities and sports organisations to advance its objectives across Nigeria.
