Nigeria and Thailand have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, with both countries seeking to deepen economic cooperation and expand trade and investment opportunities for mutual benefit.
The commitment was expressed on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, in Abuja, where Nigeria and Thailand signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Technical Cooperation.
Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, signed the agreement on behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, while Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, signed on behalf of the Kingdom of Thailand.
The agreement is expected to provide a framework for enhanced technical cooperation between the two countries and support efforts to broaden their bilateral partnership.
Speaking at the signing ceremony at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, Odumegwu-Ojukwu highlighted the importance of strengthening Nigeria-Thailand relations, particularly in the areas of trade, investment and economic development.
She said closer cooperation would create opportunities for both countries to leverage their respective strengths while promoting sustainable economic growth.
The MoU also signals renewed efforts by Nigeria and Thailand to expand areas of collaboration beyond traditional diplomatic relations, with greater emphasis on practical cooperation and economic partnerships.
For Nigeria, stronger engagement with Thailand could open additional opportunities for investment, technical knowledge exchange and access to markets in Southeast Asia. Thailand, meanwhile, stands to deepen its economic engagement with Africa through expanded cooperation with one of the continent’s largest economies.
The signing of the agreement underscores the shared interest of both governments in building a more dynamic and mutually beneficial relationship.
Both sides are expected to pursue further initiatives aimed at translating the commitments contained in the MoU into concrete programmes and partnerships that can enhance economic ties and strengthen people-to-people relations between Nigeria and Thailand.
