Mbacké, a Senegalese international student at Central China Normal University, has spent five consecutive years leading international youth volunteers in educational support initiatives for children in rural areas of Hubei Province.
Through the initiative, Mbacké has brought together young volunteers from dozens of countries, including Türkiye, Russia, Egypt, Pakistan, Zambia and The Gambia, to engage with rural communities and support children through educational and cultural activities.
The volunteers live and learn alongside rural children, organizing language lessons, cultural exchanges and creative classroom activities. Beyond sharing knowledge and experiences, they also gain firsthand insights into the lives, traditions and communities of rural China.
The initiative has provided children in Hubei with opportunities to interact with young people from diverse cultural backgrounds, helping them broaden their horizons and discover new languages and perspectives.
For the international volunteers, the experience offers an opportunity to build meaningful connections with local communities while discovering the diversity and vitality of China’s countryside.
Mbacké’s sustained involvement over five years highlights the role that international students can play in fostering people-to-people exchanges and strengthening cultural understanding.
The cross-border volunteer initiative demonstrates how education can serve as a bridge between communities and countries, bringing young people together through learning, service and cultural exchange.
By creating opportunities for international youth to engage directly with rural communities, the initiative is contributing not only to educational support for children but also to deeper understanding and friendship between China and the wider world.
