A delegation of senior Indian military officers has arrived in Addis Ababa as part of an important professional and educational visit aimed at strengthening military cooperation and knowledge exchange between India and Ethiopia.
The delegation, comprising senior officers studying at India’s National Defence College in New Delhi, was received by Marta Luwiji, State Minister for the Finance Sector at Ethiopia’s Ministry of Defense. The two sides held discussions at the Ministry of Defense headquarters on the occasion of the delegation’s visit.
Welcoming the Indian officers, State Minister Marta thanked them for choosing Ethiopia as a destination for their strategic military and educational study tour. She said the visit demonstrates India’s commitment to strengthening military relations between the two countries, expanding professional experience-sharing, and deepening mutual understanding and cooperation.
The State Minister highlighted the longstanding historical relationship between India and Ethiopia, noting that the two countries share important values, including sovereignty, national independence, peace, stability and development.
She emphasized that strategic military leadership education goes beyond understanding military doctrines. It also requires deeper knowledge of different security environments, national experiences, cultures and the importance of peace and stability.
Against this backdrop, she described the delegation’s visit as particularly valuable for promoting professional exchanges and a better understanding of the strategic and security environments of both countries.
Major General Pawanpal Singh Vishwam, Senior Directing Staff for Army Two at India’s National Defence College and leader of the delegation, expressed appreciation for the opportunity to visit Ethiopia.
He explained that India’s National Defence College is conducting a 47-week strategic study programme as part of the country’s strategic neighbourhood study initiative.
The programme is described as one of India’s leading strategic studies courses. This year’s cohort comprises 122 participants, including 41 participants from 29 friendly foreign countries.
Major General Singh also noted with satisfaction that Ethiopia is represented in the 66th course of the National Defence College, further reflecting the growing professional links between the two countries.
The Indian delegation expressed its appreciation for the warm reception extended by Ethiopia’s Ministry of Defense and the Ethiopian National Defense Force.
Major General Singh said the delegation values the relationship between India and Ethiopia and looks forward to seeing bilateral ties further strengthened in the coming years.
The visit provides an opportunity for the two sides to exchange perspectives on strategic leadership, security challenges and national experiences, while contributing to broader military-to-military cooperation.
The engagement comes against the backdrop of longstanding India-Ethiopia relations and highlights the role of defence education and professional exchanges in building mutual understanding and strengthening cooperation between the two countries.
The visit underscores a shared interest in developing stronger institutional ties, enhancing professional military exchanges and deepening the broader strategic partnership between India and Ethiopia.
