The Royal Thai Embassy in Dakar conducted a medical outreach and community visit for Thai nationals living and working in The Gambia, providing free health consultations and checking on the welfare of Thai employees in the country.
The initiative took place on 26 August 2026 and was led by Nipha Nirandnut, Ambassador of Thailand to Senegal, with the embassy extending free medical and public health consultations to three Thai nationals in The Gambia.
As part of the visit, the ambassador and embassy representatives also met Thai massage therapists and Thai chefs working at Coco Ocean Resort & Spa Hotel in the Banjul area to learn about their working and living conditions.
According to the embassy, all the Thai employees were legally employed and were receiving appropriate care and support from their local employer.
During the visit, Ambassador Nipha held discussions with Rushan Ranga Weerakkody, General Manager of Coco Ocean Resort & Spa Hotel and Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka in The Gambia.
The ambassador expressed appreciation to the hotel management for its support and care for Thai employees. She also praised the resort for promoting Thai culture through its Thai restaurant and traditional Thai massage services.
The initiatives, she noted, provide an important platform for showcasing Thai culture and helping make Thai cuisine and wellness services better known in The Gambia.
Weerakkody, for his part, praised the quality and professionalism of the Thai workers employed at the hotel. He said the resort’s Thai restaurant had become popular with customers and was regarded as one of the leading restaurants in The Gambia.
He also highlighted the restaurant’s role in serving Thai cuisine to international leaders and other prominent guests from various countries who have stayed at the hotel.
The embassy’s outreach reflects Thailand’s efforts to maintain close links with its nationals overseas, while also promoting cultural and people-to-people ties with host countries.
Through the medical outreach and engagement with Thai workers, the embassy was able to assess their welfare while strengthening cooperation with local employers and promoting Thai cuisine, traditional services and cultural identity in The Gambia.
